I hope that if you were not able to get to the opening of our show at Glenview Mansion on Sunday, October 2, that you have an opportunity to see the work before the show ends on November 1. It's an unmistakable testament to the versatility of colored pencil and the remarkable talent of our many members. Congratulations go out to Karin Heath, who took first place for her "Winter Rose," to Deborah Maklowski, whose "Black Bird" took second place, and to Blair Jackson, for taking third place with "Walking Tall." And our special thanks to Julie Farrell at Glenview Mansion, for all her help and support in getting this show together and up on the walls and for her services as our juror of awards. Thanks, Julie!!

I finally got around to looking at our February newsletter and can't get over how lucky we are to have the kind of people we do volunteering for our group. Vicki gives us the most beautiful, inviting newsletter I can imagine. Blair just doesn't slow down does she, exuding that energy?! Then I went to the website and was blown away by the job that Deborah does there. She put together another great collage of our works to adorn the top of the home page. Great Meeting

Robin and I really enjoyed the meeting last night at Blair, Inc. The video showing how the Prismacolor pencils are made was extremely interesting, and getting the free stuff was very nice also. Robin and I both thought that the jpg images of the art that our chapter has produced were the best ever! "Way to go y'all"!

Hey....it's time for someone to add to our blog. I forgot to remind people that our blog is getting a bit lonely here.

Didn't we have an interesting meeting this past Wednesday......learning about all the different types of paper! I am definitely going to try some of the art boards that were shown to us, as I am going to start doing some mixed media.

Artist In The Window For New Year's Eve

I just signed in to make a Google Account so I would be able to be a part of our CPSA 109 Blog. I have no idea if I am actually doing this correctly so that it will be posted.

I was "The Artist In The Window" at Winchester's First Night Celebration (New Year's Eve). All the shops on the historic downtown mall were open and hundreds of people flocked there for the festivities. Many, many people were watching me work on my colored pencil still life through the shop window, and some of them came in and talked with me and asked questions about colored pencil. It was a little weird at times having people almost constantly watching every stroke I made, but I got used to it as the evening progressed. I was in the window from 7 to 11 p.m.

You should have received the summer newsletter by now, this one chock full of information about the Los Gatos Convention, our previous meeting at Sabyna's studio, and a variety of other great stories. It also contains the dates for our upcoming events, which I want to reproduce here for you all. It's going to be a busy few months - mark your calendars now!

AUG 20: If you have not already done so, please send Deborah your images for the on-line jurying for the upcoming show at Goodwin House: the deadline is 6pm tonight!

AUG 21-22: Starting at 8AM on Saturday and closing at 10PM on Sunday, you can go on-line to select the work to be juried into the Goodwin House show. We've had several entries come in since the newsletter was completed, so use the instructions you'll find on the website (www.cpsa109.org) to determine how many you can vote for. The password for the voting page is in the newsletter. If you cannot find it (or did not get the newsletter), email any of the DC109 board members.

SEP 12: Annual pot-luck meeting at Blair's farm, starting at noon. Bring a tasty dish and your drawing supplies -- we'll be working on a small colored pencil project. RSVP to Blair as soon as you can.

OCT 13: Hang the show at Goodwin House, 11am. Volunteers are needed! Pls contact Blair if you can help.

OCT 16-17: The Bonnie Auten workshop in Falls Church. There's still space, so sign up soon!

OCT 24: The opening reception for the Goodwin House show (time to be determined)

For those of you with artwork in the Ratner Museum show, don't forget that the show comes down this coming Wednesday, June 30. Please be sure to come pick up your work between noon and 3:45pm, or arrange for someone else to pick it up for you. No work can be left at the Museum.

NOTE that our summer meeting has been rescheduled: it is now set for Saturday, July 17, at the Arlington Arts Center: we will get to see Sabyna's new show The Unhappy Life of a Plastic Bag, and she will give us a tour of the gallery. We'll then walk a couple of blocks to lunch: wear comfy walking shoes and a big smile!

It's also time for our members to sign up for Bonnie Auten's "Building Blocks of Color" workshop, scheduled for October 16 and 17. Full details are in the newsletter, but if you're interested, get your check to Mary Jo ASAP: it's first come, first served!

Notes from the March 10 Meeting

If you could not make it to Wednesday's meeting, you missed some remarkable art! In addition to viewing all the work that was included in the 2009 CPSA International in Georgia and in the 2009 Explore This! on-line show, several members shared with us the work they're considering entering into the CPSA's 18th Annual show in Los Gatos, CA. There was also a lot of information passed along about upcoming events: here are some quick updates for you (more details will be sent out in the next newsletter):

=Our next draw-in will be Sunday, March 21, at the Walter Reed Community Center, 2909 16th Street S., Arlington, VA, from 1 to 5 pm. Bring your current working drawing along with your pencils and tools for an afternoon of productive fun, and plan on joining the group for a light supper afterwards.

=The March 31st deadline for submitting your work to the CPSA 18th International Exhibition is rapidly approaching! Keep in mind that work accepted into the international show will probably have to be shipped in mid-June, so be sure to consider that when deciding which pieces to enter into the Ratner Museum show (which runs June 3 - 29).

=Deborah needs all Ratner artists to send her images! If your work was already juried into the Rockville show, send her those images in high resolution (300dpi) for the show postcard; if your work is new, you'll be getting a call next month to send her those images in a web-friendly size (72dpi) for our on-line jurying.

=And speaking of that, be sure to set aside a few minutes during the weekend of May 1st and 2nd to visit the DC109 website and vote for the new pieces you want to see included in the Ratner show. You'll be getting instructions on how to do that at the end of April.

=The Bonni Auten workshop is a "go" for October 23 and 24 (Saturday and Sunday)...more details to follow. If anyone knows of a good location for the workshop -- lots of working space, good natural light, walking distance to a good hotel and restaurants, and reasonable cost -- please let Blair know as soon as possible.

=Blair has lined up a new show for us at Goodwin House, a high-rise retirement community in Bailey's Crossroads (3440 South Jefferson Street, Falls Church) that has an excellent gallery space just off the entrance lobby. The show is scheduled for October 13 through December 13, 2010 -- just in time for holiday sales! -- and we'll also hold two draw-ins in the community rooms there, one at the start of the show, and one towards the end.

=The package that Connie Grace put together to apply for a show at Glenview Mansion in Rockville was very successful. We don't have dates yet, but we definitely have a show there in 2011.

=Also in the works is an invitation from our colleagues in the North Carolina CPSA chapter (DC114, Raleigh/Durham) to meet up for a weekend of drawing, mini-workshops, and general comraderie, location and dates to be determined. If anyone knows of a good venue for this -- some place about half-way between Washington DC and Raleigh with good working spaces at reasonable prices and near-by lodging, let Blair know.

Ratner Museum Show: PLEASE CHECK THIS LIST!

I have heard from almost everyone who had work at the Unitarian Church about the drawings they want to hang at the Ratner, and the list below is what I have received from each of you. Please review it and let me know of any changes or updates as soon as you can. Limit of drawings per artist is three. Titles of drawings that are new (i.e., that were not at the Church) and therefore will need to be juried into the Ratner show are in bold; please send images of those works to me as soon as you can (unless you've already done that, of course).

As Blair's email says, we hung a "smashing" show yesterday at the Unitarian Church: you'll be very pleased when you see it on Sunday. PLEASE NOTE, though: plan to arrive no later than 11:00 with an appetizer or sweet finger food. We want to be sure we're all set up and ready to welcome people to our show when the Sunday service concludes just after 11:00. If you can get there by 10:45, it'd be even better! See you there!

Latest Newsletter; Send Those Images!; 18th Annual Convention

HAPPY NEW YEAR, fellow color pencillists, and welcome to 2010! Blair sent out the latest newsletter on December 23. If you did not see it in your emailbox, send an email to info@cpsa109.org and let us know. It has all the information you need to plan your calendar for the coming year, including dates for DC109 meetings and for the Bonnie Auten workshop coming up in the fall.

If you're one of the eight members who have signed up to have your work displayed on the DC109 website and have not yet sent your images to me, it's time! You can send me up to 7 images, but please make sure they're small: no larger than 4" on the longest side, and 72 dpi. If you're not sure how to do that, not to worry, just let me know. You should all have an email from me with my contact information.

It's also time to start planning for the CPSA's 18th Annual International Convention and Exhibition, which will be in Los Gatos, CA, this year. Use the link on the right to the CPSA website to download the prospectus and all the reservation information you'll need.

In the meantime, stay warm, use the "Upcoming Events" box up above to keep up with what's happening with DC109, and we'll see you at the Unitarian Church show!

Latest on Unitarian Church Shows, Other Requests

If you have not seen them yet, please check Blair's Dec 11 emails to all members. She's asking each of us to send her the title of one more colored pencil piece to be included in the show at the Unitarian Church of Rockville: we're 25 pieces short! We're also asked to send her some images of our colored pencil artwork to help Connie prepare a cd of our work to accompany an application to Glenview Mansion for a future DC109 show.
Blair's second email lets us know that, following the Unitarian Church show's opening reception on Sunday, January 10, DC 109 members are meeting at a Georgetown gallery in Cady's Alley at 2:00, where Chris has arranged for us to visit a show of Willard Wigan's micro-sculpture. Let Chris know if you plan to attend and she'll send you the details!

New CPSA DC109 Website Now Live!

The new website is now up and running -- when you have a moment, click the "About CPSA DC109" link to the right to check it out! And if you have signed up to have your art work posted on the website and have not yet sent me images, (or if you have not signed up yet), take a look at the gallery pages: wouldn't you like one of your own?

The website also has an email function, so if you need to reach one of the DC109 Board members and are not sure how, just send an email to info@cpsa109.org and we'll make sure your email gets where it needs to go.

New CPSA/DC109 Website!

We are in the process of redesigning our DC109 website. In the next couple of days, you'll receive an email letting you know that the current website is inaccessible while the change-over is being effected. Once the new site is up and available, we will notify you to go check it out! As the new webmaster for DC109, I'd value your comments on the content and design of the new site.

The change-over will also affect the links on this page (to left of this post) for a short time until I am able to re-establish them, so don't worry if they don't work for a bit: I'll add another post when everything's restored.

The plan is to use this blog to keep you informed about upcoming events, like meetings, exhibits, and so forth, to use the DC109 newsletters to document our organization's past events and keep you engaged as members, and to use the DC109 website for content that does not change as frequently, such as who we are, how to contact and join us, the gallery of our members' art, access to a wide variety of websites of interest, and similar information. We hope the upshot of all this change will be a more dynamic and useful web experience for all our members, colleagues, and friends.

Betsy Holster, CPSA Product Research Director is working on a new series of product tests. Your help is needed to identify materials for testing. The tests will measure the effectiveness of a wide variety of the UV protectant materials that colored pencil artists use over their colored pencil artwork to enhance the lightfastness, including: UV Plexiglas, UV Glass, UV fixatives, and varnishes, and Lightfast blender pencils. Our next meeting is Wednesday March 5 at Blair Inc. Directions

Bring a cd with your entries for this year's CPSA Exhibition. You will have the opportunity to see your images projected on a screen like the judge will do. If there are problems with your images, you will have time to get them corrected or have new shots done of your artwork. Images are due to CPSA by March 31.

We will also have a presentation and discussion about how to submit your images on the CPSA website.

Bring your work, bring your questions.
